Presentation Description:

Bisexual individuals represent the largest segment of the LGBT community, yet they are largely invisible in society (Gates, 2009). Further, bisexual people are disproportionately affected by negative health outcomes (including HIV/STI) due to pervasive stigma/discrimination.(Anderson & McCormack, 2016; Bostwick, 2012). In 2018, with leadership from bisexual community stakeholders, LGBT community organizations, healthcare systems, and researchers, a taskforce was created to identify and address the health inequities facing bisexual communities in Chicago.

This poster will describe the ways in which the task force is working to improve the health of bisexual communities through community-engaged policy and advocacy. This includes examples of events attended, fundraising received and events held. Recommendations for supporting bisexual communities will be provided. Participants will be asked to reflect on and discuss their attitudes toward bisexuality and how they are supporting bisexual individuals. At the end of the poster presentation participants will also be asked to share successes and challenges related to advocacy. After attending the presentation, participants will be better prepared to:
  1. Discuss the strategies a citywide task force is deploying to improve the health of the bisexual community
  2. Identify ways to support sexual health and related needs of bisexual communities across diverse contexts in an urban setting.
  3. Describe health disparities affecting the bisexual community, with a special focus on sexual health and well-being.
